Publisher's Notes Winter 2005
There’s something about Telluride. She’s mischievous, quirky and daring, wholesome and thriving. She’s a tad upscale, yet downscale, and sort of big while small in scale, too. Telluride is a living, breathing contradiction, which makes her enormously mysterious. Though a tiny speck in the universe, she’s one that pulsates with warmth, charm and tenacity. She’s “earned her degree”to quote a Billy Joel songand with that exudes confidence and self-reliance.
If Telluride, Colorado, had a middle name, it could be “Blithe,” “Lighthearted” or maybe “Buccaneer” to reflect her intrepid qualities. Blithe and Lighthearted would, of course, reflect her congenial and carefree nature. This issue of TellurideStyle is themed in the spirit of being delightful and full of fun, for humor is the antidote for a good life. In bad times and good, we should embrace the absurd, respect the witty and have a high regard for those who make us laugh. Laughter, after all, is a free medicine that keeps our bodies and souls nourished with upbeat sensations.
Culturally inclined? Telluride’s the ticket. As the Festival Capital of the Rockies, this little lady of a town knows how to put on the shows. Comedy acts, live theatre, world-renowned festivals, fashion shows, a cardboard sledding derby, Surf the Rockies and much more highlight Telluride’s year-round calendar. If the arts and entertainment schedule makes you yearn for even more stimuli, explore another layer of Miss Telluride’s attributesoutdoor adventure thrills. Pages 50 through 78 of TellurideStyle are devoted to a multitude of outdoor activities and adrenaline-charged personalities. Additionally, you’ll have a ball feasting on Telluride’s sumptuous plate of mild to wild proceedings, which includes pandering to lux menus of spa treatments. Whether you’re in town for a long weekend or a lifetime, the delicious spread is here for the taking.
To do nothing and have everything isn’t her ambition. Rather to do a lot in a giving and thought-out way, and to drink from the vines and wines of the good life are part of Telluride’s conventions. Though a petite town nestled in the midst of the lovely San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado, Telluride offers numerous itineraries for everyone; particularly those who like to keep their minds well fed. Please unravel another stratum of Telluride’s fine character by reading about residents who put the bounce and panache into this young lady’s strides as she steps into the 21st century. We are most incredibly honored to feature former Vice President Dan Quayle and his gracious wife, Marilyn. No matter what political arena you set camp in, you’ll most assuredly find the Quayles one of our nation’s most intriguing and poised couples. Their dedication to each other, their family and our nation is gripping and reassuring. As international figures, the Quayles are forthcoming and genial. Locals have embraced this model pair, and Telluride considers them one of her most beloved treasures. As the preamble to the HighStyle section on page 120, satisfy your curiosity on how one of our vice presidents and his lady presently spend their time.
Since small-business owners are the cornerstone of America, every issue of TellurideStyle proudly features a copious number of put-it-on-the-line, go-out-on-a-limb proprietors. Risk-takers like Lee and Sheilagh Roufa, Craig Melvin, Tony Newlin, George Greenbank, Terry Hersher and so many others thrive on providing great products and services to Telluride’s streetscape. We recognize these people as our community’s inner strength, as they attract umpteen kinds of suitors with their contributions.
